BRITTO,
PAULO (BRASILIEN)
The
seminar had an open format; the general topic was literary translation. Magnus William-Olsson
began with some observations on the reading of poetry in a post-digital age,
but each participant chose his or her own theme. Marcia Schuback had suggested
that I discuss Haroldo de Campos's theory of translation; so I presented a
general overview of Haroldo's theory and commented on his own work as a poetry
translator, pointing out some dicrepancies between his theory and his actual
practice. I did not take notes on each presentation, but I remember that most
of them brought up important points. All in all, it was a rewarding experience.
It seems to me, though, that it would have been even more productive if all
participants had been previously sent some text discussing a specific topic,
and had been encouraged to express their position concerning the topic in
question. This would give the seminar more focus.
